AdventuresWithRocks was originally launched in 2012 as the educational branch of RocksInMyHead. AdventuresWithRocks is best known for the Bi-Weekly column in the Quartzsite, AZ, Desert Messenger Newspaper through which Jenn Jedidiah Free educates and excites her readers with interesting articles on rocks and fossils, geology, native american archeology, mining history, and related topics. Jenn's photo journals have captured the exciting world of geology, ghost towns, native american sites, and the like and have been published on several websites as well as on the RocksInMyHead Facebook page. Jenn's photography has also been featured in several print publications, including the prestigious collector's journal The Mineral Monograph- Issue #18 Nevada Jackpot.
As an entrepreneur, rockhound, and prospector, Jenn has owned and operated RocksInMyHead tm, a rock and prospecting shop located in Quartzsite, AZ from November 2009 until February 2017. Jenn and other miners associated with RocksInMyHead personally collected over 80% of the rock, fossil, and gemstone specimens in the shop from locations all around the world. In addition to carrying a large and unique selection of rocks and minerals, RocksInMyHead supplies mining, lapidary and jewelry making equipment, tools, and resources to their clients. After building a successul business during mild winters in the beautiful Sonoran desert and prospecting during the summer months, RocksInMyHead celebrated its final season in Quartzsite in 2017 to transition to a fully web-based model. As a lapidary and jewelry artist since 1994, Jenn has been a juried member of the Lousiana Crafts Guild, Arkansas Arts Council, Tennessee Association of Craft Artists, and the distinguished Mountain Artists Guild in Prescott, AZ. Jenn traveled the US exhibiting at Galleries and Fine Craft Exhibitions across the country. She was selected as a Featured Solo Artist at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, LA; the Sans Souci Fine Craft Gallery, in Lafayette LA; and the Mountain Artists Gallery in Prescott, AZ. Some other leading exhibitions in which her work was featured are the Southern Open Regional Exhibition in Lafayette, LA and the State Tourism Exhibition in Baton Rouge, LA featuring regional craft artists promoting tourism in Louisiana. She also has exhibited as an Artist/Instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School, NC; the Arkansas Arts Council; and the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Jenn's Mixed Media and Druzy Quartz piece entitled "Pillar" won the "Award of Distinction" at the Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon, VA in 2006.
Her artwork has been featured in The Daily Advertiser, Lafayette, LA; the Leesville Daily Leader, Leesville, LA; The Prescott News, Prescott, AZ, and the reputable Crafts Report,Dec. 2007 edition, a leading publication in the world of Fine Crafts.
In 2004 and 2005 she was selected as an artist/instructor to serve on the panel of Jurors at the ASCI District Student Art Show for public school students in the Southeast Louisiana Regional School Districts.
As an educator, Jenn is equally as accomplished. She has been a freelance instructor in lapidary, crafts, and earth sciences such as geology since 2002, working mainly with children in grades 3 through 5. She has been a Consultant, Art Director, and Instructor for several kids and youth programs including a two year stint with at-risk and ESL kids through Young Audiences of New Orleans. From 2005 to 2007 she was Art Director for Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation, creating and teaching the summer art and outdoor education program for over 200 kids ranging in age from 5 to 15 and supervising and mentoring more than 20 High School Interns.
Jenn has received several Grants to create and teach programs across the country, including Art Center of the Ozarks in Springdale, AR, Acadiana Center for the Arts, Lafayette, LA, and Gunnison Arts Center, in Gunnison, CO. She also was awarded a Grant to create and teach a Parent/Child Creating Together Workshop in conjunction with St. Charles Parish Public Schools, Lafayette, LA, as well as a Grant to build an After School and Saturday Program for Gifted/Talented Students in grades 1-8 at the South Crowley Elementary School, Crowley, LA.
From 2008 to 2011, Jenn worked as a freelance instructor in outdoor education and environmental science. In 2009 she received Certifications in Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder, Caving Trip Leader, Cave Extraction and Rescue, and Leave No Trace Trainer. Jenn has worked as a backpacking trip leader, paddling guide, climbing instructor, and caving trip leader. She has led trips
for outdoor education programs in Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Utah, and Florida. Typically, the arts were incorporated into Jenn's outdoor programs in some way. For example, kids would create a piece of art describing their adventure using objects found during their trip. In 2008, as the Summer Activity Director for the Capitol KOA in Maryland, her award-winning "Arts N The Outdoors" Program earned the campground top honors for Outdoor Activities and Children's Programs.
Today, Adventures With Rocks is the culmination of all these experiences. Jenn's expression through fine craft, education, photo, and print bring the exciting world of geology, nature, history and creativity to young and old alike.
